As the year draws to a close and the holiday season starts in earnest, we find ourselves at a natural pause.

It’s a time to reflect, reset, and reconnect.

Amid the hustle and bustle of festive preparations, gift-giving, and year-end deadlines, it’s easy to overlook the one thing that gives the season its sparkle: joy.

Yet joy doesn’t always come wrapped in glitter or delivered with grand gestures. Often, it’s found in the smallest moments. The moments that remind us of who we are, where we’ve been, and what truly matters.

This holiday season, I invite you to embark on a journey to seek joy, not just in the obvious but also in the overlooked.

Let’s collectively embrace this time with open hearts, gratitude, and reflection.

Joy in the Little Things

When was the last time you paused to savour something simple?

A mug of hot cocoa warming your hands, the laughter of a loved one, or the twinkle of fairy lights casting shadows on the wall? These small moments hold immense power. They ground us in the present, whispering that life’s beauty is often hidden in plain sight.

Over these next few days take time to notice the little things.

Watch the wind blow in the trees, the way a candle flickers, or the sound and words of your favourite holiday song. Joy, you see, doesn’t demand extravagance; it thrives in simplicity. By appreciating these moments, you create a foundation of gratitude that uplifts your spirit.

Reflect and Reconnect

The holiday season is also a time for reflection. As the calendar dates count down to the end of this period, ask yourself:

What have I learned this year?

What did I gain this year?

Who have I become or am I becoming?

What am I proud of?

I am a journalling covert. I never thought I could keep it up, but I’ve been doing for 25 years now.  I have learned that journaling can be a powerful tool for this process of reviewing and seeking joy. Set aside quiet moments to pen down your thoughts—your wins, big and small, your lessons, and even the struggles that shaped you.

Reflecting on the year is not about tallying achievements. It’s about honouring your journey and celebrating the resilience and grace with which you’ve navigated life’s twists and turns. Gratitude is the thread that ties this reflection together. By focusing on what you have, rather than what you lack, you cultivate a mindset of abundance and peace.

Gratitude for the People in Your Life

Holidays are often synonymous with family and friends. But how often do we truly express our gratitude for the people who stand beside us—those who make our days brighter simply by being themselves?

This season, let your appreciation flow freely. Write a heartfelt note, share a meaningful conversation, or simply say, “I see you, and I’m grateful for you.”

Gratitude deepens connections and fosters unity. It’s not just a gift to others but also a gift to yourself—a reminder of the love and support that surrounds you.

You can express gratitude for those you let go of this year, they came to show you more about yourself and what’s important to you. There is plenty to be grateful for.

Set Intentions, Not Perfection

The holidays often come with a pressure to make everything perfect. The perfectly decorated tree, the perfectly planned gatherings, and even the perfectly executed meals. But perfection is a myth and chasing it can overshadow the joy of the moment.

Instead of striving for perfection, set an intention: to be present, to cherish, and to celebrate the season just as it is. Let go of the need for everything to go according to plan.

Some of the most beautiful memories are born from the unexpected—the burnt cookies that still tasted delicious and have now become a source of family joy, the unplanned visit that turned into a heartwarming reunion.

The Power of Togetherness

There is a unique magic in togetherness during the holidays. Whether it’s gathering around a dinner table, sharing stories by the fireplace, or singing carols with your community, these moments remind us of our shared humanity. They are opportunities to give and receive love, to listen and be heard, and to be part of something greater than ourselves.

Even if this season finds you physically distant from loved ones, there are still ways to nurture that sense of togetherness.  Your friends may be the family that you choose, you can choose to deepen your relationship with them. Whether through a heartfelt call, a virtual celebration, or a handwritten card can bridge the miles and warm the heart.

Closing the Year with Gratitude

As you close out the year, let gratitude be your guide. Thank yourself for all you’ve accomplished—the dreams you pursued, the challenges you overcame, and the kindness you showed to yourself and others. Recognise that you are stronger and wiser for the experiences you’ve lived.

And as you look ahead, remember that joy is not just something to be found but something to be created., something to be pursued.

Choose it, cultivate it, and share it.

Let this season be a celebration not just of the holidays but of life itself—the ordinary, the extraordinary, and everything in between.

So, go ahead light a candle, sip that beverage of your choice and bask in the glow of what truly matters. Joy is already here, waiting for you to see it and experience it.

This holiday season, let’s choose joy—in every laugh, every hug, every quiet moment. Let’s choose to embrace the beauty of now.
